All started a couple of weeks ago. Elisa is preparing the news to be published on our blog and she happens to read the news about the imminent release of Victoria Alexander’s last book, Secrets of a Proper Lady. It’s the third title of the new series Last Man Standing, which has already been appreciated by American readers, and also by some of us who can read English. Moreover Victoria Alexander is very famous in Italy too, since many of her novels have been translated by the Italian publisher Arnoldo Mondadori for the I Romanzi series.
Elisa wonders why we haven’t written to her yet, so she sends her an e-mail at once, even if she has not great hopes to get any feedback.
But after a while, here is the answer: a very kind Victoria tells her she is just leaving to spend her holidays, guess where? … in Italy, and that she will be in Venice on the first week of October, what about meeting her there? Well, Elisa’s thought of course is: that’s great! She grabs at once this terrific chance and drags in also Anna, Andreina and Tiziana. Anna in fact, has just finished to read What a Lady Wants and she has enthusiastically talked about it, while Andreina is reading just now the first title of the series Effington, Patto di nozze / The wedding bargain. After some frenetic e-mails and skype messages, we all agree with Victoria about our meeting’s time and place: Saturday October 6th, under the Clock Tower right in Piazza San Marco.

Weather forecasts are not optimistic for the whole week, in Veneto and especially in Venice it’s pouring, and we fear for our journey. Tiziana in fact is to come from Brescia, Anna from Verona, Elisa from Padova and Andreina straight from Sardegna!
The said morning promises clouds, and in fact we have just the time to reach Piazza San Marco when it starts raining. We find shelter in a coffee bar and stay there until few minutes before the meeting time. The calli and the portici around Piazza San Marco are crowded with people and we risk to be late. Elisa runs ahead to find Victoria, as we fear the bad weather might have discouraged her. But she’s already there, waiting for us just under the tower where the crowd is trying to find shelter from the rain.
Elisa recognizes her almost at once and gets closer: Victoria is together with Chuck, her husband, they are both very kind and smiling and Elisa forgets our fears (at the end of our meeting she will show us her holiday planning where we can see written: “Piazza San Marco - elisarolle”, so there were no risks at all to be forgotten!)
Anna, Andreina and Tiziana catch up with the rest of the group almost immediately and we start moving through the calli searching for a coffee bar where we can have a drink and a chat all together. Due to the rain, it’s crowdy everywhere, but we don’t give up.

We finally find a tiny bar, where the owners kindly accept our invasion, and all of us squeeze around a four seats table.
We pull out our books to have them signed (one of us has even four – guess who?) and Victoria surprises us estracting from her purse (like Mary Poppins would do) two copies of one of her earlier books, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and one of her italian releases, I Giochi del Destino - The Pursuit of Marriage. She says she’s sorry, because she thought we were just two and she has not enough books for everyone of us, but she brought also a lot of bookmarks and coverflats of her last release, Secrets of a Proper Lady; with a very smooth and fast handwriting she starts signing everything in front of us. We feel a bit sorry to cause her so much trouble, but she confesses this is a very easy task, especially when she thinks of that time when, for a new novel’s release, she had to sign several thousands books in one day, so many that at the end she couldn’t move her hand any longer! *____*
We are impressed by Victoria’s kindness and friendliness. Some of us can speak just few words in English but she succeeds in involving everyone in the conversation all the same. She has got a sunny nature indeed and we feel perfectly at ease in her company.

We are very excited and while we talk with Victoria about her last works, Chuck discretely moves a bit away and gets closer now and then just to take some pictures... at the end of the meeting, he must have taken twenty shots at least!
We can’t help asking her about some insights about the projects she’s working on, and she gifts us with some very hot news.
At present she is working on the last title of her new series Last Man Standing, which should be released in October 2008, and which we hope will be soon translated in Italy too. It’s a four books series set in England, 1854 in which four impenitent bachelors form a tontine investing one shilling each and a bottle of cognac to be winned by the last man to marry.
Also the e-book Victoria recently published with Harper Collins, Lady Amelia’s Secret Lover is marginally connected to this series; Amelia in fact is the older sister of Secrets of a Proper Lady heroine. We’ve asked Victoria if this novel will be also printed as a standard paperback, but she says it’s quite unlikely because this is not a simple text ebook, but it contains as well a short movie in which Victoria talks to readers about the story and the characters. In paper format this movie would be surely lost.
On March 2008, Avon will reprint one of her first books, now hard to find, The Perfect Wife, hopefully the first of future reprints of more equally scarce books, like timetravels Yesterday and Forever, Believe, and the two Fairy Tales inspired romances Princess and The Pea and Emperor’s New Clothes.
Victoria is planning also to write some novels connected to The Perfect Wife, in which she will tell the stories of the characters’ grandsons, and she doesn’t deny she might put also a bit of magic in them, even if this is not sure yet and will be a surprise to readers.

But in Italy Victoria is known mainly thanks to her Effington Family series (11 books until now), 7 titles of which have been already published by Mondadori. This series tells not only the stories of the Effington family members, but also those of their friends and of Avalonian Royal House. But, even if at present this series has been put aside to favour the new projects, Victoria assures it is not finished yet, and that the Effingtons will be back very soon.
Interestingly this complex and long series was not born as a series at all: Victoria says it has been developed book by book, since some of the secondary characters she created were so interesting she thought they deserved their own novels. And since she did not plan all the books of the series in advance, she never thought, if not very recently, to create the Effington Family’s genealogic tree (you can find it in her website and it has been published in the last two titles too) nor she gave information about any reading orders. Doing otherwise would have meant she would have to keep her writing bound to certain links while on the contrary she prefers being free to change from a book to another one following only her own inspiration.

When reading Victoria’s novels you can’t help noticing her peculiar style, devoted to the characters and their dialogues above all, and less on the setting, to the point you have almost the feeling to watch a theatre play. And when we make this remark, Victoria smiles and says we are right, it’s true, and that perhaps this kind of writing comes from her previous work experience in television as a tv reporter. Maybe television scripts’ style has influenced her own, and moreover, she admits, when she’s writing she is so fascinated by her characters that she often forgets about all the rest. In fact, writing to her is like seeing her characters acting, talking and living – exactly like in a movie.

Of course we have to ask her opinion about paranormal romances, so popular in this moment, and about her reading tastes. Victoria reads lots of contemporary and paranormal romances, but she doesn’t like vampires and werewolves at all - that kind of books sends shivers down her back.
She loves time travels ( for instance, A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux), but stopped writing them after the first ones, because she couldn’t find a satisfying ending: in a time travel the h/h couple has always the problem to decide in which time they can live together, otherwise they have to split up.
Interestingly, she doesn’t read historical romances because she writes enough of them: in order to relax and have fun she must read something different from the genre she writes, or she can’t truly enjoy it.

Victoria types her books at the PC and doesn’t use audiorecorders, but, since she is always thinking a lot, especially while driving, whenever a new idea comes to her mind she writes it down on a notebook when she stops at the lights – time to time she even risks to be run in because she is so lost in her thoughts she doesn’t pay attention enough to the other cars.

In her private life Victoria declares to be great at cooking, but just average in housekeeping.
She enjoys cooking large meals for her friends, but everyday’s house chores somehow do not suit her <g>. She has got a son and a daughter (one of them has already finished the college); about pets, her love goes to her two bearded collies Sam and Louie (she shows us their pictures on her mobile), because she says, “…they cause much less troubles than my children and give me unconditional love.” In one of her earlier novels, Play it again Sam, she got her inspiration from her dog Sam, and it’s certainly one of the few romance novels where an animal is among the main characters: Sam infact is the story teller and it’s him bringing finally together the h/h couple (two soul mates who have lost each other in England 19th century and reincarnate in present times).

Maybe her passion for cooking will give her few ideas for a new contemporary novel: she hints to the story of a group of people from the States spending a month in a foreign country, perhaps Italy, to attend a cooking class. Contemporary romance is not a new genre to Victoria, she already published Paradise Bay with a little publisher in 1999: now this title is hart do find.
An Italian historical setting, on the contrary, would probably not been accepted by an US publisher.

She is also thinking to use booktrailers as ads for her new books: maybe her daughter, who has recently graduated in cinema, will take care of it.
It will be an experiment, because right now it’s difficult to know how much this kind of publicity truly pays off, also taking into account that, due to the publicity spaces’ high cost, they can’t be shown on tv. Very few authors in the US can afford it.

After talking few hours in front of some coffees and a plate of Sardegna’s sweets brought by Andreina (Chuck in the meantime has excused himself and has returned to the hotel, only at the end we will discover he was so kind to offer us our drinks!) it’s the moment to say goodbye.
We walk Victoria to Piazza San Marco, because she assures us from that point on she will be able to get her way to the hotel, then we take our way back home in the rain.

Our adventure is over, but we certainly will never forget it, nor we will ever forget Victoria’s kindness and exquisite friendliness. She has also promised us soon a new meeting, this time a completely virtual one on our blog, and a very special gift for her next release, The Perfect Wife!

Tutto inizia un paio di settimane fa, mentre Elisa sta preparando le news da pubblicare sul blog, quando le capita tra le mani la notizia della imminente uscita dell’ultimo romanzo di Victoria Alexander, Secrets of a Proper Lady. Il terzo titolo di una serie, Last Man Standing, che ha già riscosso molto entusiasmo tra le lettrici americane, e anche tra qualcuna di noi che legge in originale. Victoria Alexander inoltre, è un’autrice molto famosa anche in Italia, dato che molti dei suoi titoli sono stati tradotti per la collana I Romanzi di A. Mondadori. Elisa chiede come mai non abbiamo ancora pensato di contattarla, e le invia una email, senza comunque molta speranza di ricevere riscontro.
Dopo pochissimo invece, ecco l’entusiasmante risposta: una gentilissima Victoria la informa che sta per partire per l’Italia di lì a poco e che la prima settimana di Ottobre sarà a Venezia… le va di incontrarla? Elisa pensa: è stupendo! Non ci pensa due volte. Afferra al volo questa magnifica occasione e coinvolge anche Anna, Andreina e Tiziana. Anna infatti ha da poco letto What a Lady Wants e ne ha parlato con entusiasmo e Andreina sta leggendo proprio ora il primo titolo della serie Effington, Patto di nozze - The wedding bargain.
Dopo frenetici scambi di email e di messaggi su skype, ci accordiamo con Victoria per la data e l’ora dell'appuntamento: Sabato 6 Ottobre, sotto la Torre dell’Orologio, in Piazza San Marco.

Le previsioni del tempo durante la settimana non sono ottimistiche, in Veneto, e a Venezia in special modo, nei giorni precedenti si abbattono piogge fortissime, tanto da farci temere per il nostro viaggio. Tiziana infatti deve arrivare da Brescia, Anna da Verona, Elisa da Padova, e Andreina nientemeno che dalla Sardegna!
La mattina fatidica si preannuncia nuvolosa, e infatti facciamo appena in tempo di completare il nostro viaggio e arrivare in Piazza San Marco, che inizia a piovere. Ci rifugiamo in un caffè fino a pochi minuti prima dell’ora concordata. Le calli e i portici attorno a Piazza San Marco sono invasi dalla gente e noi rischiamo di arrivare in ritardo all’appuntamento. Elisa corre avanti per cercare Victoria, temendo che la pioggia possa averla scoraggiata. Ed invece eccola lì che ci aspetta, sotto la torre in mezzo alla ressa che cerca di proteggersi dalla pioggia. La riconosce quasi subito e si avvicina: è insieme al marito Chuck, e sono entrambi gentilissimi e sorridenti (alla fine del nostro incontro ci mostrerà il suo planning per le vacanze dove appare scritto : “Piazza San Marco - elisarolle”! ).
Anna, Andreina e Tiziana arrivano subito dopo e ci addentriamo tutti insieme nelle calli alla ricerca di un bar dove prendere qualcosa da bere e fare quattro chiacchere.
Tutti i locali al chiuso sono affollati a causa della pioggia, ma non ci diamo per vinte.

Alla fine arriviamo in un posto piccolissimo che gentilmente accetta la nostra invasione, e ci sediamo pigiate in un tavolino da quattro.
Noi tiriamo subito fuori i nostri libri da farci firmare! (qualcuna di noi, senza fare nomi, ne ha portato addirittura quattro) e Victoria ci sorprende estraendo dalla sua borsa (come farebbe Mary Poppins) due copie di uno dei suoi primi libri, The Emperor’s New Clothes, e una delle sue uscite italiane, I giochi del destino - The Pursuit of Marriage. Si scusa, perché pensava fossimo solo in due e si accorge di non avere libri a sufficienza per tutte, ma ha anche portato un mucchio di segnalibri e sovracopertine della sua ultima uscita, Secrets of a Proper Lady, e con una mano da scrivano provetto inizia a firmare il tutto di fronte a noi. Quando ci scusiamo per causarle tanto disturbo, ci confessa che questa per lei è una bazzecola, soprattutto se pensa a quella volta in cui, ad una presentazione di un nuovo romanzo, ha dovuto firmare diverse migliaia di libri tutte in un sol giorno, al punto che alla fine non riusciva più a muovere la mano! *___*
Victoria ci colpisce per la sua gentilezza e amabilità. Alcune di noi l’inglese lo masticano appena, ma lei riesce a coinvolgerci tutte ugualmente. E’ una persona solare con la quale ci sentiamo fin da subito a nostro agio.

Mentre noi parliamo eccitate con Victoria sui suoi ultimi lavori, Chuck si è discretamente allontanato e si avvicina ogni tanto solo per scattare delle foto… per la fine dell’incontro deve averne fatte almeno una ventina!
Non riusciamo a trattenerci dal chiederle qualche notizia in anteprima sui progetti in corso, e lei ci regala qualche informazione fresca fresca.
Al momento sta lavorando alla stesura dell’ultimo titolo della serie Last Man Standing, che dovrebbe uscire ad Ottobre del 2008, e che ci auguriamo verrà presto tradotta anche in Italia. Si tratta di una quadrilogia ambientata in Inghilterra nel 1854 dedicata a quattro scapoli incalliti che mettono in palio uno scellino ciascuno e una bottiglia di cognac per l’ultimo tra loro che soccomberà al matrimonio.
A questa serie è marginalmente collegato anche l’e-book che Victoria ha recentemente pubblicato con la Harper Collins, Lady Amelia’s Secret Lover; Amelia infatti è la sorella maggiore della protagonista di Secrets of a Proper Lady. Le abbiamo chiesto se verrà mai pubblicato anche in formato cartaceo, ma lo ritiene molto improbabile perchè questo e-book non contiene solo testo, ma anche un simpatico filmato dove Victoria stessa presenta alle lettrici la storia e parla dei suoi personaggi. Filmato che verrebbe immancabilmente perso in una trasposizione cartacea.
Per Marzo 2008 è invece prevista la ristampa da parte di Avon di uno dei suoi primi libri, ormai introvabili, The Perfect Wife, sperando che sia la prima di altre riedizioni di suoi libri altrettanto rari, come Yesterday and Forever e Believe, due timetravels, Princess and the Pea e Emperor’s New Clothes ispirati alle fiabe della Principessa sul pisello e I vestiti nuovi dell’imperatore.
Victoria sta inoltre pensando di scrivere altri romanzi collegati a The Perfect Wife, in cui racconterà le storie dei nipoti della coppia protagonista, e non esclude che possano contenere anche un pizzico di magia, anche se questa rimarrà una sorpresa.

Ma Victoria in Italia è conosciuta soprattutto per la sua serie dedicata alla Famiglia Effington (finora di 11 libri), di cui la Mondadori ha pubblicato 7 titoli. Si tratta di una serie che racconta non solo le vicende della famiglia Effington, ma anche quelle degli amici e degli appartenente alla casa reale di Avalonia. Anche se è stata momentaneamente messa da parte però, in favore di nuovi progetti, Victoria ci assicura che non è conclusa, e che anzi gli Effington torneranno prossimamente di nuovo da protagonisti.
La cosa interessante è che questa serie così lunga e complessa non è nata in realtà come una serie, Victoria ci ha rivelato che si è sviluppata libro dopo libro, dato che creava dei personaggi secondari così interessanti da meritare essi stessi un proprio romanzo. E proprio perché non ha pianificato tutti i libri della serie, non ha mai pensato, se non solo molto recentemente, di creare un albero genealogico della famiglia (che troviamo pubblicato sul suo sito e sugli ultimi due titoli originali della saga) e di dare indicazioni su un ordine di lettura dei romanzi. Farlo infatti, avrebbe voluto dire per lei attenersi a certi collegamenti che invece potevano in questo modo cambiare da un libro all’altro a seconda delle sue ispirazioni.

Leggendo i romanzi di Victoria non si può fare a meno di notare il suo stile particolare, incentrato soprattutto sui personaggi e sui dialoghi ma poco sull’ambientazione, tanto che si ha quasi l’impressione di assistere a una commedia teatrale. E quando le facciamo notare questa nostra impressione Victoria ci dà ragione, sorride e dice che è vero, e che forse questo suo modo di scrivere deriva dalle sue precedenti esperienze lavorative in televisione, come giornalista. Forse il modo in cui vengono scritti i copioni televisivi ha influenzato il suo stile, inoltre, ci confessa, quando scrive è così affascinata dai suoi personaggi che spesso si dimentica di tutto il resto. Infatti per lei è proprio come vederli muovere, discutere e vivere come in un film.

Naturalmente non siamo riuscite a trattenerci dall’affrontare l’argomento paranormale, tanto di moda in questo periodo, e farle domande sui suoi gusti in fatto di letture. Victoria legge per piacere personale molti contemporanei e paranormali, ma non ama vampiri e lupi mannari, quel tipo di romance le fa venire i brividi!
Ama invece i time travel (ha molto apprezzato A Knight in Shining Armor di Jude Deveraux), ma ha smesso di scriverli lei stessa, dopo i primi, perché non riusciva mai a trovare un finale che la soddisfacesse: la coppia protagonista di un time travel ha sempre il problema di decidere in che epoca vivere, oppure di separarsi.
Non legge storici perchè li scrive: e per divertirsi deve leggere qualcosa che si discosta dal genere in cui scrive, altrimenti non lo apprezza in pieno.

Victoria scrive al computer e non usa registratori, in compenso, siccome pensa molto soprattutto quando guida, se le viene in mente qualcosa prende appunti su un block notes ai semafori… qualche volta rischia perfino incidenti stradali perché si perde nei suoi pensieri e si distrae.

Nella vita privata Victoria afferma di essere una brava cuoca ma non un'altrettanta brava casalinga.
Le piace cucinare grandi pranzi per gli amici, ma le faccende di tutti i giorni non sono per lei. <g>
Ha due figli (uno ha appena finito il college) e due cani bearded collie Sam e Louie (di cui ci mostra fieramente le foto sul cellulare) che sono il suo amore, perché, scherza ridendo "danno molti meno pensieri dei figli e amore incondizionato". Per uno dei suoi vecchi romanzi, Play it again Sam, ha tratto l’ispirazione proprio dal suo cane Sam, che diventa voce narrante e prende vita tra le pagine come l’artefice della riunificazione di due anime gemelle persesi nell’antichità e reincarnatesi nei due protagonisti nel XIX secolo.

Dalla sua passione per la cucina, ci rivela, forse trarrà un’idea per un futuro romanzo contemporaneo: la storia di un gruppo di americani che passano un mese in un paese straniero, forse l’Italia, per frequentare un corso di cucina. Il genere contemporaneo non è nuovo per Victoria, aveva già pubblicato Paradise Bay con una piccola casa editrice nel 1999: ora il libro è praticamente introvabile. Una ambientazione storica in Italia invece non la ritiene probabile, dato che sarebbe difficile trovare un editore che gliela pubblichi.

Sta anche pensando di promuovere i suoi libri mediante i booktrailers: probabilmente sarà la figlia, che ha appena finito un corso universitario di cinematografia, che se ne occuperà. E' un esperimento, dato che per ora è difficile capire quanto rendano in realtà queste forme di pubblicità, visto anche che, a causa degli alti costi degli spazi pubblicitari, non possono essere mandate in televisione. Poche autrici in America se lo possono permettere.

Dopo qualche ora di chiaccherate fitte davanti a un caffè e a un vassoio di dolcetti sardi portati da Andreina (Chuck nel frattempo si è scusato ed è tornato in albergo, solo alla fine scopriremo che è stato tanto gentile da offrirci le bevande! ) arriva il momento di salutarci.
Riaccompagniamo Victoria in Piazza S. Marco, perchè ci assicura che da lì riesce a ritrovare la strada per il suo albergo, e riprendiamo la via di casa sotto la pioggia.

La nostra avventura è finita, ma certo non la dimenticheremo, come non dimenticheremo la gentilezza e la simpatia di Victoria Alexander, che ci promette presto un nuovo incontro, stavolta tutto virtuale sul nostro Blog, e un regalo tutto speciale in previsione della sua prossima uscita, The Perfect Wife!
