Prima però che possa mostrare il biglietto a Nicholas Brisbane, un investigatore privato che ha assunto per proteggerlo, Sir Edward muore nella sua residenza di Londra, davanti alla moglie Julia e ai suoi ospiti. Convinta che il decesso del marito sia dovuto a una malattia cardiaca ereditaria, Julia non riesce ad accettare la teoria di Brisbane che Edward non sia stato colpito da morte naturale bensì dalla mano di un omicida. Dovrà ricredersi quando lei stessa troverà quell'ultimo foglietto tra le carte del marito.
