This romp in 13th-century England should entertain her fans. When Philippa de Beauchamp hears that she is to marry William de Bridgport, "a fat old man with no teeth, and a paunch," she flees from home--buried in a load of dirty, raw wool on its way to market. Bad turns to worse when Dienwald de Fortenberry, the desperately poor but spirited "Rogue of Cornwall," seizes the wool shipment and Philippa becomes his prisoner. The young woman's spinning and weaving skills, as well as her ability to read and calculate, soon earn her the household's esteem and the position of steward, while her beauty and strong streak of sheer devilment capture Dienwald's affection, as he earns hers. Yet their happiness is threatened when Sir Walter de Grasse, Dienwald's greatest enemy, learns a secret about Philippa's past, a secret that not even she knows but that can change both her and Dienwald's future.

Worn-out plot elements make for an enervated conclusion to Coulter's ( Earth Song ) Song trilogy, set in the 13th century. Damon Le Mark's niece Daria de Fortescue is kidnapped on the way to her wedding: the kidnapper, Edmond of Clare, demands her dowry or he will rape her. Damon employs Roland de Tournay to recover the maid--provided she still is one. If not, says Damon to the rescuer, you can kill her. Roland poses as a priest to gain entrance to Clare's castle. Daria knocks Edmond out cold when he tries to ravish her, and Roland smuggles her out. Distrusting the unscrupulous Damon's motives, Roland decides to stash the young woman in Wales for temporary safekeeping but falls ill en route. Daria's ministrations include climbing into bed with her delirious protector, and she finds herself pregnant by a man who denies he's the father. Seeking assistance against Edmond, who is pursuing him, Roland approaches the king and queen of England; they take pity on Daria and urge Roland to marry her, blithely trusting that the reluctant bride and sulky groom will muddle their way to marital bliss--as, of course, they do.

Medieval England provides the background for Coulter's latest spirited romance, a tale that pits willful young heiress Hastings of Trent against her new husband, doughty warrior Severin of Langthorne. The union has been decreed by Hastings's dying father, the Earl of Oxborough, to save her and the castle and estate from the evil depredations of Richard de Luci. As de Luci's forces advance on the castle, Severin consummates the marriage with practical dispatch. He explains away his harsh commands and brutal deflowering expedient behavior (if Hastings is no longer a virgin, de Luci cannot claim her as a bride), but Hastings feels she has been raped. Seeking counsel from several older women, she is told she must change her attitude and try to please her husband. She takes their advice and, to her surprise, Severin's behavior toward her changes dramatically. Then, just as the relationship begins to grow, beautiful Lady Marjorie, Severin's long-lost first love, arrives at the castle, perhaps, Hastings fears, to try to win Severin back. Compounding her worries is her discovery that the earl had maintained a mysterious second household at Rosehaven, a keep on the English coast. After an angry confrontation with Severin about Marjorie, Hastings sets out alone to find Rosehaven.

6) The Penwyth Curse: Ambientato nel tredicesimo secolo, il romanzo della Coulter riporta in vita la serie Song e racconta la storia di Merryn, una giovane donna quattro volte vedova ma ancora vergine quando Sir Bishop of Lythe arriva al castello di Penwyth. Merryn bears the brunt of an ancient curse, which declares that no man will ever take Penwyth, or her, by force. Her four previous husbands all died within hours of storming the castle and seizing its mistress. Unconvinced that the curse is real but wise enough to take precautions, Bishop figures he'll be safe if he woos the lady first. But as he settles into life at the castle, he starts having dreams featuring an unknown wizard and witch. The novel alternates between Bishop's story and that of the mysterious figures in his dreams, but the dream-story eventually overpowers the romance between Merryn and Bishop.
