Do
you know the meaning of LGBT romance (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans)? Many of
you will raise the hand to say "Yes, I know", but many will not raise it because
they are ashamed to admit that they read erotic novels and worst, novels with
gay characters. And many will not raise their hand because they actually don’t
know that LGBT romance exists.A recent survey made by a romance magazine has established that more than 50% of the romance readers are interested in M/M (male/male) novels. But the same magazine, that takes money from authors and publishers in order to advertise LGBT books, refuses to review these books.
The largest part of this genre lives in the ebook world: publishing companies whose production is specialized in such genre (Loose-ID, Torquere Press, Samhain Publishing) or others, specialized in the erotic genre, that lately have been riding the wave of the LGBT.
Amazon has created a section dedicated to the genre and authors published in ebook have seen their works in printed version: "A bit of Rough" and "Out there in the night" by Laura Baumbach, “Willow Bend” by Ally Blue and "The Tin Star" by J.L. Langley, are examples. "A bit of rough" by Laura Baumbach has been in the top list of sale for the erotic genre, not only among LGBT novels.
I can say, since I have joined some yahoo groups, that many readers of the LGBT genre are women; like the authors (except for few though very good ones like TA Chase and Sean Michael). But when these women claim to read gay novels, the first thought that jumps to the mind of the interlocutor, and the question, is: but are you gay? and when the woman answers negatively, and says that she reads them because she likes it, the second thought (not expressed this time) is: this woman must have some strange perversion.
Years ago, an essay on the romance genre ("Dangerous men and adventurous women") began with this sentence: Few people realize how much courage it takes for a woman to open a romance novel on an airplane. She knows what everyone around her will think about both her and her choice of reading material. When it comes to romance novels, society has always felt free to sit in judgment not only on the literature but on the reader herself.
Now many women have found the courage not only to open finally that novel on an airplane, but also on a train, at school... but they are stll judge for their readings. I'm not surprised that the erotic genre, and the LGBT subgenre, don't have an easy life abroad and especially in Italy. Perhaps in a country like Italy where we are still questioning on the opportunity to publish romance novels, I think we will have to wait many years in order to see an erotic novel displayed on a bookstore window, and our generation might never see a gay erotic novel translated or originally written in Italian.

Molti di voi alzeranno la mano per dire "si", ma molte non la alzeranno anche se ne sono a conoscenza perchè si vergognano di ammettere che leggono romanzi erotici e ancora di più romanzi con protagonisti omosessuali. E molte non alzeranno la mano perchè effettivamente non ne sono a conoscenza.
Eppure un recente sondaggio fatto da Romantic Times ha stabilito che più del 50% delle lettrici di romance sono interessate al genere M/M (male/male). Ma la stessa rivista Romantic Times, che accetta i soldi per pubblicare le pubblicità dei libri in uscita da autrici di romance M/M o da case editrici come Ellora's Cave, si rifiuta di recensire questi libri.
La maggior parte del genere vive nel mondo degli ebook: esistono case editrici la cui produzione è specializzata in tale genere (Loose-ID, Torquere Press, Samhain Publishing) o altre case, specializzate nel genere erotico, che ultimamente cavalcano l'onda del LGBT (come Ellora's Cave).
Molto più: Amazon ha creato una sezione dedicata al genere ed autrici che hanno pubblicato in ebook hanno visto le loro opere stampate: Laura Baumbach con "A bit of Rough" e "Out there in the night" e J.L. Langley con "The Tin Star" sono due esempi. Inoltre il romanzo della Baumbach, "A bit of rough" è stato in cima alle classifiche di vendita nel genere erotico, che non comprende solo i M/M romance, ma tutti i romanzi erotici.
Inoltre credo di poter asserire, dato che partecipo ad alcuni gruppi di yahoo tenuti da scrittrici del genere, che la maggior parte dei lettori del genere LGBT è donna; come lo sono la maggior parte delle scrittrici (a parte esempi assolutamente meritevoli come TA Chase e Sean Michael). Ma quando queste donne affermano di leggere romanzi sulla tematica omosessuale, il primo pensiero che salta alla mente dell'interlocutore, e la prima domanda, è: ma allora sei gay? e quando l'interessata risponde no, ma che legge tale genere perchè le piace, il secondo pensiero (non espresso questa volta) è che questa donna ha qualche strana pervesione.

fa, un saggio sul genere romance ("Dangerous men and adventurous women")

literature but on the reader herself. (Poche persone capiscono quanto coraggio
ci voglia ad una donna per aprire un romanzo rosa su un aeroplano. Sa che ognuno
intorno a lei giudicherà lei e le sue scelte di lettura. Quando si parla di
romanzi rosa, la società si è sempre sentita libera di porsi come giudice non
solo della letteratura, ma anche della lettrice stessa.)Col passare degli anni molte donne hanno trovato il coraggio di aprire finalmente quel romanzo rosa non solo in aereo, ma anche in treno, nelle sale d'attesa, a scuola... ma vengono ancora oggi giudicate per le loro letture. Non stupisce quindi che il genere erotico, e il sottogenere LGBT non abbia vita facile all'estero e tanto più in Italia. In un paese in cui ci si domanda ancora se sia il caso di pubblicare i romanzi d'amore al di fuori delle edicole, penso che ci vorranno ancora molti anni per vedere un romanzo erotico nelle vetrine di una libreria, e forse la nostra generazione non vedrà mai un romanzo erotico omosessuale tradotto o scritto in italiano.
