Anne Jewel and Sydnam Butler were two of my favourite secondary characters and I was really happy when Balogh decided to pair them up in Simply Love. After reading 2 or 3 average books I decided to pick this one up and see if it cheered me up.

Anne is invited to the Duke of Bewcastle welsh estate by Joshua, the marquess of Hallmere who feels strong family ties with David, Anne's son. Since Anne hesitates in letting him go alone Freyja invites her to come along. In Wales Anne meets Sydnam one night when she was strolling outside. Scared by his appearance she runs away and later look for him at dinner to apologize.

They start a friendship recognising themselves as two scarred people by the hand life has dealt them with. They trust each other enough to speak of past dreams and desillusions and soon they became very attracted to one another.

I thought things were going rather well, I like damaged characters and I like that they heal through the power of love. However when Anne and Sydnam admit that attraction and loneliness to one another it's not of love that they speak but of friendship. It would be the perfect opportunity to share how they are falling in love with each other but instead a big misunderstanding comes of that afternoon of love. Sydnam feels he didn't please her and that he is not good enough and Anne feels he proposed out of obligation.

They separate at the end of the vacation month and after she returns to Bath Anne finds out she is pregnant. She writes to Sydnam who comes to marry her and suddenly all the peace and serenity they shared in Wales seems to be gone. They keep fighting with one another till it doesn't seem they are the same people. This part annoyed me a bit, I wanted things to happen a bit diferently instead of Anne just giving up her independence and writing Sydnam to come to the rescue. I wanted them to talk about it.

Then they decide to visit his parents, that was nice and I actually liked seeing Kit and Lauren again as their book libro ( A summer to remember) is one of my favourites from the more recent books Balogh wrote. Sydnam starts to accept that he can still do somethings, like painting, even if he has to do it a bit differently. And then they decide to go and face Anne's parents. That's when it all went downhill for me. Since she decided to face them I wanted to have some closure, for them to accept how they had wronged her and harmed her and David. In the end nothing like that happens. Leaving things as they were did not satisfy me at all even if Anne acknowleges that if things had been different she wouldn't have found Syd. Mind you that these two have still not admitted their love for each other.

Then the grand finale is a party in Bath that all the Bedwyn's organise since there wasn't a proper wedding breakfast for Anne and Syd, they seemed a bit too much, a bit like a soap opera grand finale with all the characters smiling and enjoying themselves happily into the sunset.

This books has some similarities with Lord Carew's Bride, one of my favourite traaditional regencies. Whereas in that book a lot of emphasis is given to manners and behaviours, there are also two damaged characters and several misunderstandings between them. However the magic that exists in Lord Carew's Bride is absent in this book. Maybe the problem is that there isn't a worthy villain.

But I really did like the first half of the story when they were getting to know each other and sharing their thoughts and feelings.

Anne Jewel e Sydnam Butler sono due tra i personaggi secondari che preferisco, e mi ha fatto molto piacere che la Balogh abbia deciso di accoppiarli in Semplicemente Amore. Dopo aver letto 2 o 3 libri così così, ho deciso di iniziare questo e vedere se mi tirava un po’ su di morale.

L’autrice Bestseller del New York times Mary Balogh ritorna con l’eleganza e la sensualità dell’Inghilterra della Reggenza e continua l’affascinante storia di quattro donne eccezionali - amiche e insegnanti alla Scuola per Signorine di Miss Martin. Al centro di questo affascinante romanzo c’è Anne Jewell, un’insegnante oppressa da un passato scandaloso... fino a quando incontra un uomo che le insegna la lezione più importante di tutte: niente è semplice quando si tratta dell’amore…

Lei lo spia nella crescente oscurità della sera gallese - una figura solitaria di forza e mascolinità da togliere il fiato, un volto bello segnato da un dolore segreto. Per la madre single e insegnante Anne Jewell, appena arrivata con il figlio nella proprietà in abbandono in Galles su invito di un amico influente, Sydnam Butler è un uomo il cui dolore - e passione - sono più profondi di quanto abbia mai immaginato.

Come amministratore di un maniero di una parte remota della costa, Sydnam vive un’esistenza da recluso, lontano dalla pietà e dal disprezzo degli altri. Tuttavia, fin dal momento in cui Anne appare sulla scogliera, sente che questa bella straniera è la sua anima gemella, e tra i due cuori tristi, s’insinua il desiderio. Incapace di resistere la passione che ha sottratto entrambi alla solitudine, Anne e Sydnam condividono uno squisito pomeriggio d’amore. Ora, la madre singola e il veterano sfregiato devono prendere una decisione che potrebbe cambiare le loro vite. Per Sydnam, è un’occasione per guarire il dolore del passato. Per Anne, è una promessa gloriosa di un futuro con l’uomo che la spingerà a rivelare i suoi segreti più profondi… prima di poter dargli tutto il suo cuore.

Anne è invitata nella residenza del duca di Bewcastle da Joshua, il marchese di Hallmere, che sente fortemente il legame di parentela con David, il figlio di Anne. Poiché Anne esita a lasciarlo andare solo, Freyja invita anche lei. In Galles Anne incontra Sydnam una notte mentre sta passeggiando fuori casa. Spaventata dal suo aspetto, scappa via e più tardi lo cerca a cena per scusarsi.

Inizia così l’amicizia tra di loro, in cui ognuno dei due riconosce nell’altro un’anima ferita dalla vita. Scoprono di fidarsi reciprocamente quanto basta per parlare dei propri vecchi sogni e delle disillusioni subite, e presto si sentono molto attratti l’uno dall’altra.

Pensavo che le cose stessero andando piuttosto bene nel romanzo, mi piacciono i personaggi feriti e mi piace quando guariscono grazie al potere dell’amore. Tuttavia, quando Anne e Sydnam ammettono l’uno all’altro l’attrazione reciproca e la loro solitudine, non è di amore che parlano, ma di amicizia. Sarebbe una splendida occasione per confessarsi a vicenda come si sono innamorati, ma invece in quel pomeriggio d’amore ecco che arriva un grande Equivoco. Sydnam pensa di non averle dato piacere e di non essere alla sua altezza, e da parte sua Anne crede che lui le abbia fatto la sua proposta di matrimonio solo perché si sente tenuto a farlo.

Alla fine del mese di vacanza, i due si separano e dopo essere tornata a Bath Anne scopre di aspettare un bambino. Scrive a Sydnam che arriva subito per sposarla, e improvvisamente tutta la pace e la serenità che hanno condiviso in Galles sembra essere sparita. Litigano continuamente, al punto che non sembrano neppure più le stesse persone. Questa parte del romanzo mi ha un po’ infastidito, volevo che le cose accadessero in modo un po’ diverso, invece di vedere Anne che rinuncia definitivamente alla sua indipendenza e che scrive a Sydnam di accorrere a salvarla. Avrrei voluto che ne parlassero tra di loro.

A questo punto i due decidono di visitare i genitori di lui: questa parte del romanzo è stata bella, e mi è davvero piaciuto rivedere Kit e Lauren, poichè il loro libro ( A summer to remember, Un’estate da ricordare ) è uno dei miei preferiti tra i romanzi più recenti della Balogh. Sydnam inizia ad accettare l’idea di essere ancora in grado di fare alcune cose, come ad esempio dipingere, anche se deve farlo in maniera un po’ diversa da prima. Poi, decidono di andare ad affrontare i genitori di Anne. E questo è il punto in cui per me questo romanzo è precipitato. Dal momento che lei ha deciso di affrontare i propri genitori, avrei voluto vedere “chiudere” la faccenda in qualche modo, con loro che accettano di aver sbagliato nei suoi confronti e di aver fatto soffire sia lei che David. Invece, alla fin fine non accade niente del genere. L’idea di lasciare la situazione così come stavanon mi ha soddisfatto per niente, anche se Anne ammette che, nel caso in cui le cose fossero andate diversamente, lei non avrebbe mai trovato Syd. Attenzione, però, i due protagonisti non hanno ancora ammesso il loro reciproco amore.

Il gran finale è un party in Bath organizzato dai Bedwyns, visto che non c’era stato un pranzo di nozze adeguato per Anne e Syd: questo mi è sembrato un po’ eccessivo, sullo stile del gran finale di una telenovela, con tutti i personaggi che sorridono l’un l’altro e si divertono spensierati mentre il sole tramonta sullo sfondo.

Questo romanzo mostra alcune somiglianze con Lord Carew’s Bride ( inedito in Italia ), uno dei regency tradizionali che preferisco.
Anche se in Lord Carew’s Bride viene data molta più importanza agli atteggiamenti e al comportamento dei protagonisti, ci sono comunque due personaggi feriti e diversi equivoci a separarli. Tuttavia, la magia che esiste in Lord Carew’s Bride in questo libro non c’è. Forse il vero problema è che non c’è un “cattivo” degno di questo nome.

Mi è comunque piaciuta molto la prima parte della storia, dove loro iniziano a conoscersi e a condividere i loro pensieri e le loro emozioni.
