In 1865 reporter Jena Leigh Hawk believes in telling the truth to her readers yet hides her gender behind the male sounding name of J. L. Rebel. She does that because she knows men have a better chance of getting the story while she hopes this job enables her to complete her quest, finding her siblings. She also hides her beauty behind thick glasses and shabby oversized clothing as she does not want anyone to hit on her.

Her current assignment is personal as she has found some clues that lead her to Galveston, Texas in search of her two brothers Whit and Drew. However, her efforts are made complicated by Colonel Clay Madison who rescues her from a union soldier and somehow seems to see past her drab garb to her beauty and her cynical exterior to the heart of the matter. While she investigates a prostitute's homicide and continues her search for her family, he insists on protecting the woman he loves who is now the target of a killer.

Nel 1865 la reporter Jena Leigh Hawk crede nel principio di raccontare la verità ai suoi lettori e tuttavia nascondo il suo sesso dietro uno pseudonimo maschile, J.L. Rebel. Lo fa perchè sa che gli uomini hanno delle opportunità migliori di ottenere la storia mentre le spera che questo lavoro la renda capace di completare la sua ricerca, trovare i suoi fratelli. Nasconde anche la sua bellezza dietro degli spessi occhiali e sciatti vestiti fuori taglia dato che non vuole che nessuno la punti come preda.

Il suo attuale incarico è di natura personale dato che ha trovato alcuni indizi che la conducono a Galveston, Texas, alla ricerca dei suoi due fratelli, Whit e Drew. Tuttavia, i suoi sforzi vengono complicati dal colonnello Clay Madison, che la salva da un soldato dell'unione e in qualche modo riesce a guardare oltre il suo travestimento e notare la sua bellezza e superare il suo atteggiamento cinico per arrivare al cuore della questione.
